Frequently asked questions

What is Class 21 in trademark registration?

Class 21 is the Nice Classification class for household or kitchen utensils and containers; cookware and tableware, except forks, knives and spoons; combs and sponges; brushes; cleaning articles; unworked glass; glassware, porcelain and earthenware. In India a trademark is registered class by class, so a Class 21 registration protects the mark for those goods only.

What is the difference between Class 21 and Class 11?

Class 21 covers household and kitchenware; Class 11 covers lighting, heating and cooling. Class 11 is the one for electric cooking appliances.

Should I file in Class 21 and Class 8 together?

Often, yes. Class 8 is the one for knives, forks and spoons. A mark registered in one class does not stop a competitor using it in another, and we advise on the class set before filing so you pay only for the classes you need.

Are pressure cookers, pans and cookware in Class 21?

Yes. Pressure cookers, pans and cookware are among the typical goods filed in Class 21, along with water bottles, flasks and lunch boxes and dinner sets, cups and glassware.

Which businesses usually register in Class 21?

Typically cookware and kitchenware brands, steel-utensil manufacturers, glassware and crockery makers, home-cleaning tool companies and water-bottle and flask brands. Each files for the specific goods it deals in, often alongside Class 8.
