Frequently asked questions

What is Class 12 in trademark registration?

Class 12 is the Nice Classification class for vehicles; apparatus for locomotion by land, air or water. In India a trademark is registered class by class, so a Class 12 registration protects the mark for those goods only.

What is the difference between Class 12 and Class 35?

Class 12 covers vehicles; Class 35 covers advertising, business and retail. Class 35 is the one for vehicle dealerships and online vehicle sales.

Should I file in Class 12 and Class 37 together?

Often, yes. Class 37 is the one for vehicle repair, servicing and charging-station services. A mark registered in one class does not stop a competitor using it in another, and we advise on the class set before filing so you pay only for the classes you need.

Are cars, motorcycles, scooters and e-bikes in Class 12?

Yes. Cars, motorcycles, scooters and e-bikes are among the typical goods filed in Class 12, along with electric vehicles and e-rickshaws and bicycles and cycle parts.

Which businesses usually register in Class 12?

Typically automobile and two-wheeler makers, EV start-ups, auto-component manufacturers, tyre companies and bicycle brands. Each files for the specific goods it deals in, often alongside Class 37.
