Frequently asked questions

What is Class 6 in trademark registration?

Class 6 is the Nice Classification class for common metals and their alloys, ores; metal materials for building and construction; transportable buildings of metal; non-electric cables and wires of common metal; small items of metal hardware; metal containers; safes. In India a trademark is registered class by class, so a Class 6 registration protects the mark for those goods only.

What is the difference between Class 6 and Class 20?

Class 6 covers metal goods; Class 20 covers furniture. Class 20 is the one for non-metal furniture fittings.

Should I file in Class 6 and Class 19 together?

Often, yes. Class 19 is the one for non-metal building materials. A mark registered in one class does not stop a competitor using it in another, and we advise on the class set before filing so you pay only for the classes you need.

Are steel bars, rods, sheets and tmt bars in Class 6?

Yes. Steel bars, rods, sheets and TMT bars are among the typical goods filed in Class 6, along with aluminium sections and profiles and metal pipes and tubes.

Which businesses usually register in Class 6?

Typically steel and TMT bar manufacturers, aluminium fabricators, hardware and fastener companies, metal-door and window makers and lock and safe manufacturers. Each files for the specific goods it deals in, often alongside Class 19.
